Vaio UX 3G modification
Project: Mount a working 3G USB modem inside a Vaio
UX57GN and upgrade to a solid state hard drive.
Components:
ZTE MF626 3G USB modem
micro slide switch
Mtron 32Gb V2 solid state hard drive
A ZTE 3G modem with the housing removed, the modem was unlocked by
flashing it with the instructions at
http://stanford-clark.com/3dongle.html
The inside of the UX rear housing was cut away making a cavity to fit
the modem
internals.

The Mtron SSD is just thin enough to fit the modem
between it and the rear housing, the modem is jammed up against the
drive but all works.
A green micro slide switch just poking through the air vent provides
power on/off to the 3G modem.
The D+ and D- USB lines are connected to the spare
1-seg flexible cable, power is connected to the main USB
connector.

Project complete:
In good signal areas 3G speed is really good.
Success!
